Bah Humbug…..Dealing with Financial Goals During Holidays
Around the holidays, it can be especially difficult to stay motivated to achieve your financial goals. Not only do marketing experts “cleverly pull out all the stops” in order for us to purchase, purchase, purchase but our friends and family members also have high expectations of what they would like for the holidays. Although people, including me, say that they are going to cut back on spending this holiday, it is really hard to do this. Here are some tips that I’ve found that have helped me. Hopefully they will help you also:
1. Realize the real reason for the holidays. Somewhere along the way, it got materialized “big time.” Therefore, if you concentrate on giving of your time and love instead of giving of monetary gifts, you will not only save bucks but feel good in the process.
2. Be honest with people. Tell them the truth. Tell them that you messed up and are in debt and that you really need to get a handle on things. Acknowledge that you really do love and care about them but that you have decided not to go all out for the holidays. Instead, suggest that you don’t exchange gifts this year or have a small budget of $5 per person. This will force you to be more creative with your gift giving.
3. Don’t feel guilty. Oftentimes we feel guilty when someone does something for us and we then turnaround and do something for them out of guilt. Don’t do that this year. Realize that you must change your ways if you truly want to materialize wealth. If you start feeling guilty, visualize yourself being debt free and how much you can do and give back when you reach that point.
